A fun fact about Mystic Falls, they celebrate everything - especially if it's even remotely historical. For Founder's Day, they set aside a week of events. The kickoff party has passed. It was lovely and it was at the Lockwood's like always. But, tonight, tonight is the Bachelorette Auction (amended by Mayor Carol Lockwood to be hip and have a twist of tradition. never one to color too outside the line, Miss Mystic Falls Caroline Forbes endorsed it - so everyone did). The bachelor auction is held inside the ~~world famous~~ Grill.

During the day, the town readies for Founder's Day as they build floats, stages and put up stands. There's even a half day off school and a cookout. The usuals: hot dogs, hamburgers, any condiment you'd like and lemonade better than your relative could make. Live music. Lively fun. Enjoy the festivities.

In the Grill there's a buffet of fried goodness and for those of age (or who can compel people things) it's happy hour. (Carol Lockwood likes her booze)

Each woman steps up to microphone and says something about themselves while bachelors throw out bids.

After, everyone splits off back into the town square for music and the winners get what could be called a date.

Stefan doesn't really know what he's doing here. He was called, so he came, but at the same time he really wishes he were anywhere but here. He had better things to do today. Like brooding. And drinking.

But hey, at least he can drink here.

"Why am I here?" He slides up on the stool next to his brother and looks over them both. "And don't say because we're Founding Family members because that excuse was old before we became vampires."

Brooding and drinking aren't things.

Psych, Alaric can do both of those things and he's an expert at it. But, he's been in a good mood lately. Today's drink with grading is just a formality. It feels weird not to drink and grade at the same time. Damon was not invited. He invited himself. Stefan, on the other hand, is welcome. At least for the duration of the following exchange.

"You're here to take him off my hands. A student overheard him pulling apart her take on Dracula." And he's annoying. Even best friends need time away from one another. "Also, I want to know which one of you is planning to bid on Elena."

They are absolutely things.

Stefan can occupy his brother. That much is certain. They are experts at occupying each other with varying degrees of destructiveness and that's actually saying something. But it's the second part that throws him for a very confused look.

"Why would we be bidding on Elena?"

Hey, the narration changed their stance on them.

There is a chance that the Salvatore brothers are the epitome of why people can't have nice things, especially when they get together but Alaric is willing to take his chances - and theirs. He needs some peace and quiet.

It's a weird question to have to answer, considering the three of them haven't discussed the Damon and Elena of it all and how it pertains to Stefan and/or Elena. But, he seems genuinely perplexed?

"You don't know what tonight is," he says, looking at Damon.

"Don't look at me. I'm not responsible for getting the groundhog to peek his head out and end winter," Damon says, hands coming up, innocently. "Any day someone hasn't been killed or almost driven off Wickery bridge is a win in my book." It's possible Damon has too much fun with that - the bad brother Stefan of it all.

Alaric just gives him a look.

"Elena's in some Bachelorette auction tonight."

Stefan's brow furrows even further at that, before glancing around the room. Then he glances back to Alaric. "I'm assuming you're asking this because you don't want me to bid on her, right?"

"Me? I don't care which one of you bids. If you even bid. I think she deserves a good time, treated right. It's been a crap year for all of us. I'm going to be otherwise engaged." He looks over at Stefan. "I'm surprised. You two are usually all over town engagements."

Stefan gives him an incredibly skeptical look. "Yes. Because usually there's some kind of looming vampire threat and we have to be here to protect Elena. But given that me and Elena are no longer me and Elena and I have taken up the mantle of 'Irresponsible Brother' for the next few decades, I think I'll sit this one out and let you two deal with it."

Damon was probably not informed of this change but guess what, it's happening.

"Don't tell me I have to become the responsible one all of a sudden. You do remember our resident band of vampire slayers?" The ones who made Mystic Falls their business.

Alaric for his part - he's there for Elena's best interest. He's gotten his answer. He wants to say she'll come around but he doesn't mean it like that.

"Aren't you two still friends?"

"I don't know what we are." Stefan admits honestly. There's a bit of irreparable damage that comes with trying to drive your ex-girlfriend off the bridge where her parents died. He's not exactly putting a lot of effort into finding out either. "And I don't see why that matters for a date auction."

"Elena forgives," he reminds Stefan, looking in Damon's direction. Who has she had to forgive time and again? "Okay. Take him off may hands. If I don't get this done, I'll have an unhappy girlfriend going out with some old high school flame." With her luck.

"Yeah, brother."

Stefan sighs heavily, before nodding and following Damon off to points unknown. This was going to be a long evening that he didn't want to be a part of.
