Damon Salvatore has never been the subtle brother.

Which is why he's currently laying in Elena Gilbert's bed, holding that stuffed bear of hers. She's doing something with someone somewhere and that's perfectly fine. They haven't really talked since Denver and maybe that's by design. Damon gets it. What happens in Denver... But, he's getting a little antsy so he feels like it's time to pay her a visit. He knows she doesn't love when he does this. The impulse to peek into her diary was great but he curbed that, so she should be grateful. A teenager's medicine cabinet is never interesting to snoop through or pinch from so, that's out of the question. He decides to manipulate the little bear's feet. Better than its no-no place.

He doesn't know if she and Stefan are anything or if they've even talked. He's not going to ask. At this point, it doesn't matter to him. So, they made out up against the wall in a motel with really shoddy lighting, so does everyone.

And of course, he's here in her bed because he doesn't care.

Damon Salvatore has never been subtle, which is why Elena Gilbert is not surprised when she comes home from helping Caroline get ready for the Decade Dance to find Damon lounging on her bed like he owns it.

He doesn't, in case that was being called into question.

They haven't talked since Colorado, and in some ways they probably need to, but right now Elena has too many things to do and when it comes to things with Damon, ignoring it has always been easier than facing it, even when facing it is much needed. In this particular instance, she has no particular choice but to face it.

All the more reason for her to try and pretend like nothing's wrong. "What are you doing here, Damon?"

"Spending some quality bear time," he replies. "He looked lonely." Or, she. He doesn't know what gender Elena's bear is supposed to be, just that it probably doesn't matter in the grand scheme of anything right now. Much like what's going on here.

And if Elena's going to pretend like nothing's wrong, then Damon's just going to face it not being wrong. Because nothing is.

"And looking through your brother's things. He picked up quite the fetish in the mile high city." Is he kidding? One can never know! (He is.)

"I know you clearly have no respect for my personal space, but could you at least stay out of Jeremy's?" She drops her bags down on the chair next to her bed before making her way further into her room. "He doesn't need another reason to be suspicious of you."

Or to not want him around either. Not that Elena cares about that. Jeremy's opinion on Damon is going to be a tough one to improve.

That perks up his ears. His hands go to the bears arms as he holds them up in shock to match his face.

"Little brother's suspicious? Now, why would that be?" He moves the arm to make the bear look like he's contemplating. "Hmm."

She rolls her eyes at that. "Please don't make this worse, Damon. It's bad enough he keeps trying to hunt. I don't need him digging into things he wouldn't understand."

"See, you saying that makes me think that you think there's something to dig into." How far off is he, Elena? He sets her bear aside. There, no more bear molestation. "I'm just trying to keep up, here."

"He saw us in Colorado, Damon. There may not be anything, but he thinks there's something. And until I can dissuade him from that, I'm not going to be pushing my luck."

Or ... anything else for that matter.

"It's the 'there may not be anything' part where your voice wavers and I don't believe you" he says, folding his hands. "But, hey, I'm not going to push my luck," he adds, holding his hands up, palms facing her. Also, he hasn't gotten up and he's not planning to any time soon. "My question, is why do you care what little Jeremy Gilbert thinks?"

"Because he's my brother, Damon. I care about what Jeremy thinks, just like you care what Stefan thinks." And she knows he does. Which is why he hasn't bothered to make a move before that moment in Colorado.

While it's a low blow, it's an honest one. You've successfully silenced him. But, he's still not moving. He could care less about Jeremy Gilbert's approval to be honest. But, he cares about Elena getting her way and being happy. He's taken her choices away a few too many times. She's probably never forgive him if he told her about the time he compelled her. Both times.

"Stefan isn't here."

"No, he's not," she replies softly. It feels like he's here, sitting around them like an elephant in the room, and honestly? Elena doesn't know what she wants yet. She just knows that she has strong feelings for both of them.

She just doesn't know which one is stronger.

"Come to bed?" He gives her his enticing eyebrows. Because, he can't be serious. Feelings aren't serious. Not to him right now. Not when Stefan is a topic at hand.

She sees those enticing eyebrows and shakes her head. "I have homework to do. And you should probably go home."

"I should probably go home or I should definitely go home? I can as quiet as a church mouse," he says, giving her innocent eyes to follow.

She rolls her eyes. "You can definitely go home. I highly doubt that you are capable of being ignorable."

"I see fun Elena won't be making an appearance tonight," he says, getting up from her bed. He uses vampire speed to be right there in front of her. "Something happened in Colorado. Jeremy saw it. Let me know when you decide if it means anything." And, if it doesn't, maybe don't let him know. "Enjoy the homework." And he starts to walk out.

"I never said it didn't mean anything, Damon," she says softly. She knows he can hear her, but she needs to know that he at least heard this before he leaves. "I just don't know what it means."

He stops. He can hear her. He gives her a look back before continuing on. Maybe he has a chance in this after all.
