It was a simple mission. With Klaus and the other Originals gone, Matt and Caroline could retrieve his friend and her ex from the wilderness of the Appalachian mountains. Matt had never been a vampire nor a hybrid, so he didn't know if Tyler could feel a sire bond being broken. But, Tyler was still radio silent and there was no way of reaching him. Sheriff Forbes pulled a string or two and Caroline and Matt had gotten a GPS location for Tyler's cell phone. The only choice that had to be made was whose vehicle would be taken. But, Matt had his two-seater truck so that was a no-brainer.

He hadn't spent any time with Caroline since her birthday surprise and even that hadn't ended well. First Stefan had knocked him out and then he had to bring Caroline back to her house after Tyler had bitten her. Why was he surprised. Nothing in Mystic Falls went off without hitch, why would a birthday in a graveyard?

Matt had offered to drive but this was Caroline and Caroline's car. This meant two things: she drove and she picked the music. He kept his mouth shut as Taylor Swift sat on repeat. At least she didn't just do one song. Maybe once they grabbed Tyler, they'd get a say.

Majority ruled?

Matt couldn't help his mixed feelings for his old friend but, he had to keep reminding himself that Tyler had been sired. All of a sudden, thanks to a spell he still didn't quite understand, (he'd been left out of that plan) that wasn't true any more. Maybe, thanks to that, he could get his friend back. And as a good will gesture, he was going to be accompany Caroline. He'd invited Elena but she was busy. Something about Mr. Saltzman. She said she'd fill him in later. No Elena usually meant no Jeremy (because he knew she'd kill him for taking Jeremy out of state) but that didn't matter because Jeremy was in Denver. That was weird. And it wasn't like they were going to invite a Salvatore.

So, it was just them, the road, and GPS coordinates.

Matt sets his phone down on the table and makes a plan in his head. If he turns right back around, he should be able to get back in two, three hours tops. He takes another bite, his mind now squarely on what's happening back in Mystic Falls. Hopefully, Caroline will understand when he tells her he won't be accompanying Ty and her overnight.

Caroline will be thrilled actually. Feel free to tell her as soon as possible. Especially since she is coming into the restaurant to steal one of your french fries and sit at the table across from you.

"No Tyler. Nothing but his voicemail, as usual. When we find him? I'm going to reteach him how a cell phone works."

"Any chance that'll take a few hours?" he asks, taking a sip of his soda. Finally, he clues in to what he means. "Elena needs help back in Mystic Falls. When we reach Tyler, I might have to leave you with him. There's stuff going down with Mr. Saltzman..."

Her eyebrows go up a bit, but she doesn't comment right away. While she has no problem with Matt leaving her on her own with Tyler, she's more concerned about what's going on with everyone's favorite history teacher.

"What happened to Mr. Saltzman?"

"He got arrested. Meredith Fell says he attacked her," he explains, taking a few fries. "And apparently, Anna, the bartender at the Grill? Has friends in town. Suspicious friends."

"What?" She thought Meredith was on their side. "But she ... when did this happen?"

There's a small huff. "I knew we shouldn't have trusted her."

"I guess last night," he figures. "He was arrested this morning," Matt says, explaining what he knows. "But, that's all we know. I'm going back and we'll... do something." He knows Elena will have a plan by the time he gets back.

"Elena's just worried. I think it would help if I go back. Can you and Tyler get a room or something?"

She nods absently. "Tyler has a car, we should be able to get back on our own. Once we get there, you go. She'll need your help."

God, it's weird discussing Caroline and Tyler getting a room but, he's over that awkward. And he's over her. So.

"Okay. Thanks, Car." He takes another bite, a sizeable chunk out of his burger. "I think stuff is going down," he says, mouth full.

"It sounds like it, at least." She pauses for a moment, before reaching for another fry. "When you get there, tell us if we need to rush."

"I will," he replies before taking a sip.

"Good."

She takes a breath, before nodding. "We should get going. The sooner we get there, the sooner you can get back."

He nods, shoveling the last of his burger in his mouth. He stands, crumpling up the wrapper before grabbing his fries.

"The sooner we know what's going on."
